Dream Multimedia clamping down on "forged" Dreamboxes!!

I wasn't sure to post this in news or dreambox but:

Today dream multimedia have asked anybody who know's any information on so called "forged/cloned" dreamboxes to contact them.

A statement released on the dream website said the following:

Attention!
Unfortunately we have found a growing number of forged Dreambox 500-S entering the market!
Due to this, we are going to institute legal proceedings against all vendors of these forgeries.
This is also for the sake of protecting our retailers.
If you can provide us with information pertaining to vendors of forgeries, please feel free to contact us via e-mail:
plagiate@dream-multimedia-tv.de

i'm not sure what dream can or will do about this but please buy the proper box. Dream have also been asking people to check the box to make sure it contains the hologram on the 500+ -s models.

Guessing dream are refering to the growing number of "e*gle box" sales to want to take such action.

Well

IMHO Dream may be disgruntled however unless there was a worldwide patent taken out on the designs I doubt that anything will stand up in a court of law. The only people they could attempt to prosecute are the manufacturers and only if the above patents are in place. In the UK you may be able to persuade Trading Standards to take up the case but would they really want to?
If the boxes are being sold as Eagle then there is no case to answer
It is the equivalent of Ford taking Vauxhall to court for selling a car of similar design, performance and looks. Only if the stbs are being marketed as Dreamboxes would there be a case to answer

I have had some of these "dream badged" clones...and they have been terrible for me.

However there are some "copycat" linux boxes with different designs such as eaglebox which are good

What they are mainly complaining about is the direct clones, the ones which are badged as Dreambox and you can't blame them. People are being sold these as Dreamboxes, which they aren't.

Yes

I can understand that but I have to honest I have never seen one anywhere but to be fair I have not really been looking. It is the same in all aspects of retail but I still think that it is wrong to target the retailers who have probably been duped by the manufacturers just as much, they should be going for the source.

You really think so Topper?

They are buying them in direct from China at silly prices, they know full well that they aren't the real thing.

The poor old Ebay box shifters, being misled.

these badges clones are almost identical to the original, I mean even on the package boxes they have the hologram on them.

The offical dream site and many other places on the web indicate what you need to look out for. Also the instruction book has a poor quality finish with made in china on the back. lol

I bought 2 of mine knowing that they were badges clones at 60 quid each. As far as the performance of the badges clones, the 2 that I had, it was noticable how slow it was to FTP from software such as DCC and dreamboxedit. very, very slow

Muhuhuhahahahahaaaaarrrgggh

One thing they could do is drop their prices, this way building clones would not be attractive anymore.

Ermm

Guessing dream are refering to the growing number of "e*gle box" sales to want to take such action.
So we are not talking about Eagle boxes as the O/P mentioned, we are talking about proper clones that are being dressed up to look like and sold as Dreamboxes. That is a different matter, the same as at our place selling fake Nike socks
They are forging a brand and brand name that is not only theft of intellectual property rights it is counterfeiting. Sorry I obviously got the wrong end of the stick, especially if the retailers know the fact that they are counterfeit

I bought my dream off Ebay last year sometime, but before i bought i made sure the seller showed me a few pictures which i wanted to see.

But like everybody else, i have to agree with dream on this one. The quicker we get rid of them chinese clones the better. Instead of cutting a corner to save a few quid you end up paying the price in lack of performance.

Amount of people who complain about buying chinese ones by mistake is horrendous. Buy from known satellite stores, make sure it isn't shipped fresh from the far east, and try and make sure to contact somebody before you buy if possible.

As for the likes of eagle boxes it's easy money isn't it, they copy the inside design of a dreambox, change the casing, sell it off under a diferent name for cheaper and rake the cash in...business is business.

:-)

Exactly like the car manufacturers, how many people know that the Toyota Aygo is the same car as the Citreon C1 and also the Peugeot 107.

Off topic I know but it is the way the world is going. Lets be honest in the stb market re-badging has been going on for years.

true, all somebody like me needs now is for somebody to rip off sly's firmware layout for the dreambox lol.

Once you got hold of one box and know what your doing you can do out really.

but again custom built computers nobody has a problem with it.....hmmm tailor made dreambox *imagines*

its been going on for a while, the cable scene has been flooded with them from china with the c model and complaints are not that many, some are buying direct from china for £60 including delivery.also there have been reports of the clone satellite versions being sold by satellite dealers for the full amount.

Re: been going on a while

Yeah it has but that is just the thing, the parts used in these "clones" are just cheap and nasty......i think the chinese clone has proven that.
