Channel Four looking for £150 million | | Large corporations looking for big amounts of cash is nothing new, but when they are looking for a slice of public cash, it puts different angle on things. But this is Channel Fours vision of the future; they feel that even in this digital age, they can provide a valuable public service. But they have a financial black hole which needs £150 million to fill.
The management talk about bringing in new British programming including giving more time over to children’s shows, and over 260 hours of new documentaries. While they will be bringing in more home grown entertainment they also intend to spend less on American shows, in fact it will be around £35 million less, which begs the questions what are they going to be showing?
With all of that out of the way all they need to worry about now is convincing the government and the regulator Ofcom that they are doing a good job and are worthy of funding. But how this will happen, if indeed it happens at all will be down to what role Ofcom see Channel Four playing in the future of Public Service Television. |
