Positive results for German Biog

Germany’s version of the Biography Channel has enjoyed positive results after its first year in operation. The pay-TV channel, which commenced broadcasting on March 31 2007, has more than doubled its subscribers from 500,000 to 1.25 million, NBC Universal Global Networks Deutschland announced. The German subsidiary of US media concern NBC Universal operates The Biography Channel as a 50-50 joint venture with the US company A&E Television Networks.

Biography Channel screens biographical portraits of well known personalities as well as real-life and lifestyle series via cable, satellite, IPTV and mobile TV. Selected programmes are also available on the channel’s own video-on-demand platform at www.video.thebiographychannel.de as well as on other online video services.

“The success of The Biography Channel’s first year shows us that quality prevails and is rewarded with a healthy growth in reach,” said managing director Andreas Weinek. He added that in order to achieve swift digitalisation more cooperation between pay-TV platforms and fewer competitive measures amongst platform operators would be desirable.
