India’s DTH operators and broadcasters must agree new fees, alowing operators to cut the fees they charge subscribers by April 4, or risk having the regulator decide exactly how much channels will get. The dispute, which has been rumbling for some time seems to be coming to a head and is likely to result in channels getting less for their DTH feeds than previously. These costs are likely to be borne by channels rather than the platforms themselves. Regulator TRAI has ordered that channel operators offering bouquets of channels via DTH can only charge DTH operators half of what they get from non-conditional access system (non-CAS) cable operators in per subscriber fees. At the moment, DTH operators are being charged more than cable operators for most channel bouquets, including those offered by Star, Zee-Turner, ESPN-Star Sports and the Sun Network. DTH operators’ savings will to be passed on to their subscribers, resulting in lower monthly subscription fees but a hit to the pockets of the content providers. Source: Rapid TV News
