BBC’s Cranford dominates BPG awards

The BBC’s ratings and critical hit Cranford has won four top Broadcasting Press Guild Awards. Dame Eileen Atkins beat off tough competition from the show’s other two “Dames”, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and was named as Best Actress by the BPG. Other Cranford prizes were for Best TV Drama Series, and Heidi Thomas as Best Writer for her adaptation of Elisabeth Gaskell’s novels. Philip Glenister nabbed the Best Actor award for his role as Mr Carter in the star-studded drama.

The BPG awards are voted for by those who write about British TV and radio - correspondents, critics and previewers - and are being presented at a lunch today (Friday) at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It's sponsored for the second year running by Turner Broadcasting, home to channels CNN International, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies.

BBC presenter Andrew Marr won two awards: He was named as best TV performer in a non-acting role for his Andrew Marr Show and for his History of Modern Britain, which also won the award for best documentary series. Channel 4's Boy A won the award for best single television drama. ITV1's powerful and moving film about living with dementia, Malcolm and Barbara: Love's Farewell, was voted best single documentary, despite controversy before it aired, over whether or not it showed the actual moment of death.
