The BBC is moving into subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) with the launch in Taiwan of a service on the network of Chunghwa Telecom. The move also represents the first time that the BBC has launched a high-definition service outside of the UK and comes ahead of the launch of the BBC’s linear HD channel in Asia later in 2008. BBC HD SVOD will offer 10 blocks, each with three hours of multi-genre programming in English with Chinese subtitles. Subscribers can choose one block at a time. Programming includes drama Cranford, comedy Sensitive Skin, and documentary series Earth: The Power of the Planet. Menus and promotional programming on the blocks will be in Chinese. Christine Leo-McKerrow, general manager of BBC Worldwide Global Channels Asia-Pacific, said: "The BBC HD SVoD launch in Taiwan will be the first time the BBC HD brand is available outside the UK and in advance of the 24hour linear channel launching later this year."
