Animation channel Jetix has – at last - extended its carriage contract on France’s Can*****. While financial terms were not revealed it seems that Jetix has come away from its renewed carriage deal on French DTH platform Can***** with the hint of more local promotion. The agreement is for a “multi-year” term. “This new agreement signals a joint objective of strengthening their relationship in order to offer Jetix both a prominent audience and position in France,” said a joint statement. But the new agreement provides positive closure on what has been a worrying nine months for Jetix in France. It emerged last June that talks between the two on renewing their agreement had broken down. The old agreement ended in December, and while a stay of execution was granted to allow the channel to continue transmission it was also clear that the two parties were still some way off from a total agreement. At stake is transmission, and the position that most DTH players now take, which is to squeeze third-party channel providers with lower carriage deals on a per-subscriber basis while arguing that expansion of the DTH overall cake means greater advertising revenues, as well as a greater opportunity for the all-important licensed merchandising sales that come from spin-off products for children’s channels.
