Abertis-Eutelsat: ‘No change’

For some time the European satellite market has been talking about Abertis’ next move within the industry.
Spanish infrastructure company Abertis, through its telecom division, already holds 32% of Eutelsat. Abertis also owns 28.4% of Hispasat. Eutelsat itself owns about 27% of Hispasat, and so the common sense conclusion was that Abertis could do worse than to consolidate its significant holdings into one.

The logic had not escaped the Spanish government, seemingly alarmed that Hispasat might well end up consolidated into Eutelsat, which is perceived as a French company.

There has been plenty of press speculation that Abertis was looking at acquiring other stakes in Hispasat, not least that of Telefonica (13.23%) and three other minor shareholders with a total of 25.68%.

Now, and seemingly putting the rumours to rest for the time being, Abertis CEO Salvador Alemany, told analysts April 2 that Abertis does not intend to make a move [in terms of satellite].
