Saudi Arabia: worst for Mid-East piracy | | Software piracy specialists Symantec says Saudi Arabia ranked as the leading country as a source and target for malicious piracy in the Middle East.
The Symantec study (Internet Security Threat Report) says the United Arab Emirates has made significant progress in its own battle with cybercrime, but Saudi Arabia (ranked at No. 32 in the global piracy list) remained of concern. Saudi Arabia is also recognised as a problem region by the Federation Against Software Theft (FACT) in relation to DVD and music piracy.
As for the activity of these Cybercriminals, Saudi Arabia is claimed to be both a source of criminality, and a target for hackers and malicious attacks. Ivor Rankin, Symantec’s senior security consultant, said: “It is quite interesting to see Saudi Arabia emerge as the number one [Gulf] source of malicious attacks. If you look at last few years, as countries expand their broadband infrastructure, we see more interest from attackers to target these countries - the bigger the pipe, the more the value to the hacker."
