Dubai is the new centre of the universe, at least in the opinion of local residents.
Sky News (pictured, left) is said to be opening a news bureau in the town.
A local news report suggests that London-based
Sky News will open a news bureau in the Gulf. The report, in new Dubai newspaper Xpress, adds that Doha in nearby Qatar (and already home to the controversial Al Jazeera operation) is another option. “We’re looking to open a front door in the Gulf region in addition to our eight bureaus that cover major capitals from Beijing to Washington,” John Ryley, head of
Sky News, told journalists in Dubai. Stella Tooth, a senior press relations officer at
Sky News, said the intention was to have a bureau up and running within the next 12-18 months.
Sky News is not alone in looking closely at Dubai to generate at least some of its news coverage. CNN has had a modest bureau in the city for some years, and is boosting its local presence, while Reuters is also busy in the city. MBC has its 24-hour news channel Al-Arabiya headquartered in Dubai’s Media City.
