SingTel agrees iPhone deal | | A two-paragraph announcement was all that was required: Apple’s iPhone will not be exclusive across Asia.
SingTel, Singapore’s incumbent telco, and associate companies, will market the phone in Singapore, India and the Philippines, as well as in Australia. The phone will be sold through India’s Bharti Airtel and the Philippines’ Globe Telecom, both of which SingTel owns stakes in, as well as SingTel usit Optus in Australia.
Vodafone said last week that it would bring the iPhone to Australia and New Zealand, as well as India, and yesterday’s deal with SingTel firmly lays out that the iPhone will not necessarily be exclusive to one carrier any longer, as has been the case with deals elsewhere in the world, particularly Europe.
There are no precise details on timing but iPhone distribution in Asia is expected to start later in the year.
