Dubai joining Eurovision?

A Middle East TV station is talking to Eurovision about participating in next year’s song festival. Eurovision is one of the world’s longest-running such events and captures up to 600m viewers annually.

The news that a Middle East station – as yet unnamed – would be participating in a format of the event was revealed this week by the EBU’s Svente Stockselius in Belgrade. He added that other discussions were underway which could see other licensing deals elsewhere around the world. This year’s final takes place this weekend in Belgrade on May 24.

It isn’t necessary for a participating country to be formally part of Europe, either in the geographic or political sense. Israel has participated for many years, as has Turkey.
