Telstra: mobile TV subs older | | Australian telco Telstra has claimed that contrary to common assumptions, research suggests that its mobile TV subscribers “predominanly represent an older demographic”. Telstra offers the 30-channel Mobile Foxtel from Telstra service (pictured, left) on its 3G network.
Research by the telco has found that in April, subscribers watched 80,000 hours of programming, up 98% from the same month 2007.
And while a good proportion of subs are young and male, “snacking” on content throughout the day, there is evidence of an older demographic regularly accessing the service during TV prime time – presumably when there’s nothing on the telly.
In fact, said Robert Vannini, executive director, Telstra Product Management, "7pm on a Saturday night is the most popular time for subscribers to watch Mobile Foxtel from Telstra, followed by weeknights at 7pm. And, the family-oriented demographic, particularly customers aged 41-50, are most likely to subscribe to the service.”
Entertainment and music channels score highly, with the top five channels entertainment service Fox8, The Comedy Channel, music services Channel V and V2, and entertainment channel TV1. Rounding out the top 10 services are Nickelodeon Moile, music channel Max, The Disney Channel, Fox Sport News TV and MTV.
Childrens’ channels are watched for the longest periods of time.
Vannini said: "Analysing the content our customers are consuming leads us to believe that parents are using the service to entertain their children and teenagers are using their parents' handsets to watch their favourite programs."
