TVP funding dispute escalates

The future funding of the Polish public broadcaster TVP is to be decided by the country’s Constitutional Tribunal.

According to local reports, President Lech Kaczynski has referred amendments to legislation that would result in a broad cross section of viewers exempted for paying receiver licence fees to the tribunal.

It has been estimated that the amendments could cost public service broadcasting in the region of PLN240 million (€72.6 million) if they came in effect.

They have already been criticised by Fritz Pleitgen, the head of the EBU, in a letter sent to President Kaczynski last week.
