With a share price at an all-time low, it was inevitable that take-over speculation would rise in direct proportion to the fall in price. Now, all manner of predators are reportedly circling ITV, looking for an inexpensive acquisition. The logic is inescapable: that the economic downturn cannot continue for ever, and that despite its current malaise ITV occupies some valuable shelf space in the UK’s digital transmission space. But first up, and likely by the end of this week, will be a UK regulatory decision on whether BSkyB must now sell a major portion of its current 17.9% holdings in ITV. Even if forced to sell, it is possible that Sky will ask for time to make the disposal, which will probably be granted. However, with around 10% of ITV likely to then come onto the market it will be interesting if any broadcasting name emerges as a likely buyer, and perhaps showing what their longer-term strategy might be for ITV. Amongst the usual suspects with names in the gossip columns, players like Italy’s Mediaset must be considered a potential player. Same with Haim Saban, and RTL. But, in truth, anyone could emerge as a potential player especially those who see ITV as being a strong, powerful broadcasting brand with potential. Source: RapidTVNews
