Hundreds of thousands of people who use the ZoneAlarm firewall to protect their PC have been locked out of the internet by Microsoft's latest round of software updates. Microsoft released four high-priority fixes as part of its regular Patch Tuesday update, one of which left ZoneAlarm users without web access. It is thought that the MS08-037 fix is designed to plug a vulnerability in the way that Windows handles the internet's system of addresses, which could have allowed hackers to reroute web users to malicious web pages. The patch appears to have been responsible for "compatibility issues" with ZoneAlarm. A spokesman for ZoneLabs, the company that manufacturers ZoneAlarm, said the problem had come to light when US users began downloading the Microsoft code. Zonelabs posted this advice: "Sudden loss of internet access: Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users. We recommend that users uninstall KB951748 using "Add or Remove Programs" until the issue is resolved." Source: TimesOnline

Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Unaohm EP313, Swires Annie 204 Spectrum, Rover ST-4 Spectrum. | That would tie in with my main PC playing up last night, I don't use Zone alarm, but it definitely slowed to a crawl on sites after loading the latest windows update, whilst the other PC which didn't update was fine.

Well I was having problems last week before the latest security updates went in and I do not use zone alarm however when having a look in the add remove software I discovered I had multiple updates of different versions of Java and different runtime updates and even one with a different icon. I downloaded the latest version in full then uninstalled them all and installed the downloaded one and my PC is OK now.

| Got shut out using XP. Had to remove ZA and now using XP firewall. Pain in the butt. Luckily have Ubuntu on dual boot so I could work out the problem was with the patch and not my isp.

I'll bet the computer repair shops are inundated with cries for assistance. For the technically savvy once they know what the problem is, it will be remedied easily, for the rest however it could be a while
