UK adult broacaster Smile TV, owned by Square 1 Management, has been fined £17,500 ($35,000) for breaches of regulator Ofcom’s Code in relation to adult broadcasts. “Smile TV,” said an Ofcom statement, “began transmitting in April 2007 (and since 12 July 2007 has operated under the name Blue Kiss TV). It is a free-to-air TV channel operated by Square 1, broadcasts without encryption and is listed in the ‘adult’ section of the Sky EPG. It shows mainly live programmes using female presenters who invite viewers to contact them using premium rate (telephone) services.” The channel was broadcast unencrypted and free-to-air, but at 22.25 on May 23 one of the girls seemingly got a little carried away (the full Ofcom ruling can be read at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv/obb/ocsc_adjud/SmileTV.pdf ). Ofcom received a single complaint. Ofcom agreed that the on-screen antics were “explicit and prolonged”, and thus in breach of the Code. Square 1 has subsequently assured Ofcom that its presenters have modified their behaviour, and that the girl in question had now left the station. Given also that the channel has “modified” its output, the fine, at £17,500, was less than previous breaches by rival channels. Source:RapidTVNews
