BBC's choir beats ITV's karaoke

BBC1's talent show Last Choir Standing proved to be a more popular attraction than ITV1's own singing show on Saturday with 4.4m viewers (24.6%) at 7pm.

The hour-long show managed to build its audience from an initial 3.6m (21.7%) to 5.1m (26.7%) in the final 15-minutes.

The corporation's hour-long show was down though by 200,000 on the opening show last week when it launched in a 7.45pm slot with 4.6m (22.8%).

Last Choir Standing was some way off the pace of the channel's slot average for the year so far of 6m (28.5%). Last year, BBC1 averaged 5.4m (26.9%) in that slot.

The BBC1 show had more viewers than ITV1's own singing talent show Who Dares Sings!. Saturday's edition, which aired at 8pm, secured 3.5m (18.1%) over 60-minutes. Last week's show picked up 3.9m (19.3%) at the slightly later time of 8.15pm.

Whilst Who Dares Sings! was on air, BBC1's lottery show This Time Tomorrow appealed to 4.4m (24.6%) for 50-minutes.

BBC1 stayed in pole position at 8.50pm with Casualty on 5.2m (25.8%). ITV1's Foyle's War, at 9pm, managed 3.2m (17.4%) for two hours.

BBC2's Carry On-themed night of programming entertained audiences. Viewers saw the funny side of a repeat showing of the 1969 film Carry On Camping which drew 2.4m (12.6%) for 90-minutes at 7.30pm. A re-run of Cor, Blimey! at 9pm entertained 1.6m (8.6%).

Channel 4 had some mixed fortunes. A repeat of the feature-length documentary The Day of the Kamikaze managed just 957,000 (5%) for 90-minutes at 7.30pm. The programme was seen by 60,000 on C4+1. The broadcaster stepped up a gear at 9pm with Big Brother on 2m (9.9%) and an additional 346,000 watching the timeshifted channel C4+1 at 10pm.

Five's highlights of the test cricket finally came alive at 7.15pm. The 45-minute coverage of the first test between England and South Africa fell just short of the million mark on 990,000 (5.4%). It was the channel's highest audience for the coverage since it started this year on 15 May. So far this yearthe sport has averaged 712,000 (3.7%) at that time for the channel.

Five's audience went even higher at 8pm for a double helping of NCIS. The first at 8pm had 1.3m (6.6%) with the second at 8.55pm on 1.3m (6.3%).
