European copyright cartel ended

The EC has announced its final verdict in a landmark case on music copyright brought by Music Choice five years ago.

It orders EU-based copyright collecting societies to allow music users to obtain multi-territorial licences for pan-European exploitation across cable, satellite and the internet from any one of the 27 EU countries.

It also stops them from preventing composers from joining whichever collecting society they wish to have represent them within Europe.

Music Choice filed its complaint in protest against the restrictive practices of EU-based collecting societies.
