Sky Italia celebrates 5th birthday with 4.5 million subs

Sky Italia has celebrated its fifth birthday, more than doubling the number of subscribers it had in 2003.

Five years ago, the Italian DTH platform had around 2 million subscribers, while today it has over 4.5 million. Sky Italia currently carries more than 170 TV channels (60 more than in 2003), while audience ratings have grown from 2 to 9% on a daily basis. Over the past year, Sky Italia invested more than €1 billion in Italian movie production. Besides satellite, Sky Italia’s channels are also available on the IPTV platforms of Telecom Italia, Fastweb and Wind.

Also, Sky Italia has reputedly reached a tentative agreement with RAI which will see the public broadcaster acquiring from the satellite TV operator the broadcasting rights for the 2010 (winter) and 2012 (summer) Olympic Games. In turn, RAI will offer Sky Italia the TV rights to the football World Cups 2010-2014.
