Echostar begins new European push

Echostar is looking to reignite is European business with a series of advanced receivers that include digital video recorders and other entertainment devices for cable, IPTV, satellite and terrestrial markets.

“EchoStar Europe provides EMEA’s digital television operators with advanced set-top solutions that are optimised to increase ARPU, reduce op-ex and enable operators to launch better and more advanced entertainment services,” says Rick Smith, VP sales and marketing EMEA, EchoStar Europe.

The manufacturer already supplies product to a number of European operators.

One significant product is the EchoStar-owned SlingMedia. The placeshifting technology is already used by the Nordic DTH operator Viasat. Other operators, including Canal+, have expressed an interest in devices that allow subscribers to view their content away from the home.

Echostar has now developed an embedded version of the Slingbox that is scheduled for release in Q2 2009.
