Moto speeds advanced set-top plans

Motorola is accelerating is set-top based multimedia platform. The device allows consumers to transfer content between devices, making it possible to enjoy multimedia content at home, or out and about through portable devices such as mobile phones.

The first implementation will go live on November 1, when the Japanese operator KDDI uses the Motorola platform as part of its new au BOX service. Consumers will be able to use the box to rip CDs then transfer them to to a portable media player via USB.

“Motorola’s aim is to deliver seamlessly connected networks and solutions to enable new service creation for operators and to offer rich media experiences for the consumer,” said Dan Moloney, executive VP and president of Motorola’s Home and Networks Mobility business. “This new set top platform is a significant step forward for Motorola in the progress towards our vision of media mobility.”

The technology is based on the KreaTV open software platform, the Linux-based system acquired with the 1996 purchase of Kreatel.
