Will web threaten digital radio, mobile TV?

The success of the internet could become a threat for the development of digital radio and mobile TV in the next ten years, says a new study from research company BSConseil on behalf of France's parliamentary commission for digital dividend.

Largely used by the youngest generations, mobile internet will start to touch older audiences, argues BSConseil. At the same time, more than 80% of French households should have fixed broadband connections within the next 10 years. And the great majority of 3G and 3G+ mobile phones should give access to broadband internet and then TV programmes.

BSConseil is forecasting brakes to the development of digital radio and mobile TV. “Despite the fact that they will have to buy a new radio, listeners are not seeing very much any added valued into digital radio compared to the current offer,” the study says.

It concludes that penetration of digital radio will concentrate in ill-covered analogical areas in the next five years to represent no more than 30% of the population.

Mobile TV is also considered more as a “complementary media” than a mass media. Within the next five years, mobile TV will be moderate, representing not much over 30% of the population and will address the youngest ones first.
