New speed cameras can track a car for 30 miles

Those cunning ways of dodging speed cameras are about to be dashed by ones that can track cars 30 miles.

The hi-tech gadgets clock drivers at entry and exit points and work out the average speed for the whole distance.

It means an end to the days of braking suddenly when motorists spot a camera then speeding up once past it to evade a fine. The new cameras, which cost £200,000 to £1million depending on the size of the area covered, could be on roads across the land next year.

Some are already in use on motorways.

The technology allows up to 50 cameras to talk to each other via phone or internet lines, calculating a car's average speed even if it makes left and right turns down a variety of roads.

Supporters claim the system has already reduced accidents by 50 per cent. But critics insist it is a new war on drivers, who paid £106million in fines last year.

Brian Gregory, of anti-speed camera campaigners The Association of British Drivers, said the technology could make motorists lose concentration.

He added: "People put the car in cruise control and the mind in neutral. It's so boring driving through these sections at a constant slow speed that people are going to drop off."

The gadgets are set to replace 6,000 yellow Gatso cameras on rural and urban roads.

Makers say they can cover areas from 250 yards to 30 miles.
