YouTube wants ‘legit’ content | | YouTube is doing very well, thank you, with the running time equivalent of 57,000 movies a week uploaded to its site, albeit made up of thousands of user-generated content each minute. However, YouTube co-founder and CEO Chad Hurley is asking professional programme-makers to partner with the video hosting website.
Hurley told delegates at the MIPCOM programming market that the difference between old media and new media was simply “semantics”, and that both ends of the content spectrum were confronting the same challenges. Except that today’s technology “exists to give you control and unprecedented reach anywhere, anytime”.
He argued, perhaps alluding to the numerous writs from content-owners that YouTube has and is facing, that the internet doesn’t erode viewership. “So, do you circle the wagons and push back change or do you embrace it?" Hurley explained that every day YouTube adds 13 hours of fresh content every minute.
Hurley said that two years ago YouTube had just one content “partner”, the BBC. Today it has about 900 similar relationships worldwide. “There is still a lot of work to be done," he said, in terms of establishing methods to continue bringing revenue to the content providers. "Revenue is a part of fostering creativity," he said.
Hurley told MIPCOM delegates: “We want to continue to be your partner and continue to work with you. We want to work with content owners to make more and more informed decisions about managing and distributing your content.”
He proposed a strategy where the legitimate content owner could, at any point, make the decision to keep its content active, or take it down, or track usage as a route to generating revenues, and arguing that digital internet distribution “ceases to be a threat, [and] is a fundamental distribution solution.”
