RTE puts UK channel on hold

Ireland’s public broadcaster RTE has written to communications minister Eamon Ryan saying it would be unwise to continue with plans for a UK-based channel given the current economic climate. Advertisements for senior staff had already been posted.

The 2007 Broadcasting Act requires RTE to set up a channel to bring its programming to “Irish communities outside the Island of Ireland” and plans had previously been brought forward to launch the service on St Patrick’s Day 2009. However, with no time limit set the pressure for an immediate launch is removed.

RTE International was to have been a hybrid of RTÉ One and RTÉ Two with selected programming being drawn from the Gaelic-language channel TG4.

The government, which intended the channel to later launch to other Irish communities, remains committed to the project.

My System: Fuba 85 dish, fuba LNB, Kathrein UFS 732 & 910 recievers & diablo light cam card, Kathrein UFS910,AAF2.3e & Enigma 2

After speaking to an old school friend last weekend in a little village between Belfast & Dublin where a prominent member of the Irish government lives i was told that the government are contemplating introducing a card system for Sat users. They are looking at the model in Austria, on paying your tv license you get your card, to open RTE 1 & 2 as well as maybe 1 or 2 others. A fee of about €25-50 would then be charged for every extra card issued to a household!!! All you will need to get this card is an Irish address, TV licence & a free to air reciever or cam that can deal with the choosen encryption!!! This will not be part of the Sky Package but there is an option that it could eventually go to the Freesat system for Northern Ireland, where it was agreed with the Good Friday agreement that RTE should be available to the full island!!!!!!
Only time will tell.........

Time, thats the key word, thanks for the info, for the moment I'll continue with the basic IRL $ky card, shame really as I only really watch RTE 1 and TV 3 for the news and thats it, really don't need Murdoch otherwise. It always amazed me why so many people in Ireland had $ky.

Regards JD Belgium.
