Japan gets tough on piracy

According to local reports Japan’s commercial broadcasters are stepping up their efforts to curb piracy of their programmes by Chinese users.

Nippon Television (NTV) and the Japanese content provider representative Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), are actively considering strategies to deal with the illegal broadcast of Japanese television series and animation on Chinese video-sharing websites such as Youku and Tudou. CODA stated that the websites provide unauthorized access to recently broadcast copyrighted Japanese programming.

According to the media reports, a key word search of "Japanese television series" on Youku and Tudou brings up over 100,000 results, and the sites even provide dedicated pages related to Japanese shows.

At the beginning of 2008, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK has already discussed its copyright concerns in person by sending representatives to China to open negotiations and sign agreements with several websites on the condition they delete infringing content. The Chinese websites involved in the negotiations at the time deleted most of the offending material.

In addition to the NHK, the Japanese National Association of Commercial Broadcasters, an alliance formed by commercial Japanese television stations, is also examining strategies to deal with the issue.
