BBC signs up Match of the Day until 2013

The BBC has signed a deal thought to be worth £171million to show Match of the Day until 2013.

Premier League highlights will be available online for the first time through the BBC's iPlayer and Match of the Day Two, shown on Sundays, will also by available on iPlayer.

Bbc Sport boss Roger Mosey said: "We're delighted."

The deal was seen as vital to ensure presenters such as Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer were not paid for doing nothing."

The Premier League said the BBC bid matched its previous contract - also thought to have been £171million.

It is the first of a new batch of Premier League deals to run from August 2010 to 2013.

Next week is the closing date for bids for the main live match coverage packages.

BSkyB and Setanta hope to retain their share of these, though Disney-owned ESPN is also understood to be considering a bid.
