UK ads hold back Discovery growth

Discovery Channel grew its international revenues by 12% in 2008 as operating income increased by 49% to $1,310 million on the back of 52% growth at international networks and a further 37% growth from the United States.

The advertising market remained flat as strong growth in EMEA and Latin America were pulled back by the UK. Discovery remains in dispute with agency Sky Media over the capping of revenues received by the broadcaster. The contract is due to expire at the end of 2009. With the UK excluded advertising revenue in local currency increased in the fourth quarter by 14%.

Fourth quarter International Networks’ revenue decreased by 4% to $294 million as the $33 million impact of currency fluctuations was felt through a 2% decline in distribution revenue and a 12% decline in advertising.
