Classic BBC sitcom Birds of a Feather set for comeback

TV smash-hit Birds of a Feather could make a comeback – as long as the scripts are great.

Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph have been asked to make another series by the team behind the classic BBC sitcom.

Pauline, who played downtrodden Sharon Theodopolopoudos, said they were up for the challenge if the writers came up with good ideas.

She said: “People remember Birds of a Feather so fondly because it didn’t tail off at the end, the standard of the scripts didn’t deteriorate.

“We’d be keen to maintain that standard. None of us would want to make a new series that was below standard. I’d rather stay at home doing the housework.”

The show got 15 million viewers during its Nineties heyday on BBC1.

Sharon was living with her sister Tracey Stubbs, (Robson) while their dodgy husbands were in prison.

The Essex girls spent a lot of time trying to avoid their snobby sex-mad neighbour Dorien Green (Joseph).

The last time we saw them they had been forced to move out of leafy Chigwell for downmarket Hainault after running out of cash. Pauline said: “We did 101 episodes over 10 years. Not bad for a show that was basically three women sitting round a table, talking. I’m very proud of it.”

A new series would be a fantastic reunion for Pauline and Linda, who are real-life childhood friends.

Pauline is now waiting to see what the scriptwriters come up with.

She laughed: “How about three old girls in a nursing home, talking around a table? If we leave it much longer, it might come to that.”

Since the show ended in 1998, Pauline, 50, has starred in dramas including The Sculptress, Being April, Down to Earth and Maisie Raine. From March 16 she will host Missing, a BBC daytime show about people who have disappeared.

Lesley, 63, appeared in ill-fated soap Night and Day and celebrity editions of What Not To Wear, Ready Steady Cook, Come Dine With Me and Cash In The Attic.

Linda, 50, is a regular on Grumpy Old Women and did Posh Swap for Five. She has been in a number of celebrity shows and made the semi-final of Celebrity Masterchef last year. She has also campaigned against knife crime after 16-year-old Ben Kinsella was stabbed to death in London last year and died in the arms of her son Louis.

Programme-maker Alomo, which made the original Birds of a Feather, has been bought by Freemantle, the firm behind The Bill, The X Factor, Neighbours and Britain’s Got Talent.

Oh good grief they really are scraping the barrel if they bring that series back.

Plenty to scrape through though, it was probably unlucky enough to rise to the surface before Only When I Laugh.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness"
