Sky begins smart card replacement

Sky has commenced the process of swapping out its ten million smart cards, a procedure which is likely to take several months.

On air promotions were screened for the first time this week advising viewers of the change.

In addition to the letter that will be issued with the replacement card, Sky has also produced a microsite to guide subscribers through the process.

There is no immediate threat to the security of the NDS VideoGuard conditional access system and the procedure is thought to be nothing more than routine.

In total there are around 10.9 million Sky cards in use, 9.2 million subscribers, and a further 1.7 million issued to Multiroom households.

That looks like a white NDS3 card to me (the new card that is). Although italia ones are slightly different, they went from blue to white also.

It might be a stupid question but do you know the cost of changing more than 11 million cards ?

My System: Pace Sky HD, DM7000s, CubeRevo 3000HDPVR, Transparent 80cm Dish, Moteck SG2100 DiseqC motor, lots of legacy gear. Meters: Satlook Digital NIT, Televes H45 Digital Spectrum analyser.

It may be simply to address the card sharing issue, or because they feel that someone is close to breaking it, whatever the reason, we won't really know until they swap them out.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

One thing's for sure - given the huge cost the decision won't have been taken lightly or implemented before it was absolutely necessary. This is not preventative maintenance as such, it's a response to something that has happened.

I'm sure you're right Paul, the mushrooming of cardsharing I would guess could be considered enough to bring about such a swap, I'd be very surprised if they haven't tried to counter it in some way.

Hello All

Can't seem to find anything on that link to Sky Microsite, but I do have to delete the *********** bit to get through due to Host/DNS set up.

BUT

I have dropped my subscription to Sky, and only use the box for FTV, do you know if I will need/get a new card?

Best

W. Hole

[Yes I'm still here - just up to lots of stuff that prevents me being more active.]
