Portugal launches DTT in 29 cities

Portugal's government has launched digital-terrestrial TV in 29 cities, far surpassing its initial plan to launch the platformin between 8 and 10 cities. So from its very beginning, Portuguese DTT covers 40% of the country's population.

Besides this there are a number of places where the coverage reaches homes in relatively good quality.

Another nice surprise about this news is the possibility of receiving DTT through the computer by TWN’s new mobile broadband chip which integrates a DTT tuner.

Portugal's DTT project is very ambitious because in spite of arriving late in contrast to its neighbouring countries such as Spain or France, the government plans to have analogue switch-off by next year.

The platform includes the national public and private TV channels such as RTP1, RTP2, SIC and TVI as well as the signals of RTP Madeira and RTP Açores both from the Portuguese islands. And in the next few weeks the broadcasters RTP, SIC and TVI will launch together a HDTV channel according to 'Tele Satelite' magazine.
