Speed camera makes £1 million in five months

The camera, which was fixed to monitor cars on the busy A316 Country Way, in Hanworth, South-West London, was catching motorists at the rate of more than 100 every day and ended up ensnaring 16,213 speeders.

With a normal speeding offence resulting in a £60 fine and 3 points it means the camera site was responsible for £973,000 worth of fines and almost 50,000 penalty points.

Transport bosses put the cameras up to police a temporary 30mph limit on the road, which usually has a 50mph restriction, and is used by thousands coming into and out of the capital via the M3.

Works at the site included improving the signage and road markings, putting in more street lighting as well as waterproofing and resurfacing the viaduct.

Cameras were put in place to catch speeders heading in both directions from mid June to the end of November last year. It caught 11,010 motorists breaking the limit heading out of the capital and another 5,203 heading into London.

The figures for the speed camera haul were revealed by the Metropolitan Police Force following a Freedom of Information request.

A spokesman for the Camera Partnership in Kent, said: "We remain very concerned that so many motorists disregard the temporary speed limits on roadworks sites, and we issued more tickets on roadworks in the last financial year than in the previous twelve months despite having fewer roadworks projects to enforce and despite mainly using mobile technology which is only present at any site occasionally.

"Drivers are at risk in roadworks where the lanes may be narrower, the layouts change and there is no hard shoulder for broken down vehicles.

"Just because there may not be roadworkers present it doesn't mean that the motoring public are not at risk from the unexpected."
