BSkyB and Irdeto use S3 technologies

Pay-TV operator BSkyB and encryption manufacturer Irdeto have opted for the test solution StormTest from Silicon & Software Systems (S3).

BSkyB wants to use the test and analysis system developed by the international service provider for the digital TV industry to implement an automatic verification of set-top-boxes. Irdeto wants to use StormTest to check function compatibility of its encryption technology during the development and test phases on a multitude of devices.

As John Maguire, director product strategy, TV technology from S3 explained to Rapid TV News, StormTest can for example simulate a set-top-box user extensively using the zapping key on the remote control to run up and down TV channels for five hours without interruption. The way the receiver responds is recorded and opens the possibility to the manufacturer of the unit or individual components to correct possible malfunctions in the hardware or software before introducing it to the market.

“With our automated solution we create better, more extensive and more accurate results as with manual test routines,” said Maguire. “Additionally, it requires fewer personnel and can run round the clock on any day, saving time and money.”

StormTest users can access the test runs worldwide from any location. This means that they can follow the test routines for function compatibility – for example the new Push-Video-on-demand service of a local pay-TV platform via cable, satellite or ADSL – even if the platform is not available in the country they are based in.

With the new solution, which is offered worldwide, S3 is targeting TV broadcasters, platform operators, manufacturers of encryption systems and middleware, amongst others.
