Refund unlikely: Make sure you cancel Setanta bills

Setanta customers are unlikely to get a refund after the collapse of the digital pay-TV channel last week. Customers paid an average of £12.99 a month.

Setanta, which had the rights to selected Premier League and Scottish Premier League football games among other sports, went bust after months of difficulties.

Administrator Deloitte has said it will not take any more payments from the 1.2million direct subscribers, most of whom paid monthly. Jon Ingram of comparison website ConsumerChoices says subscribers should check their monthly statements to ensure no further payments are deducted.

Payments taken by card cannot be cancelled so card holders are reliant on Deloitte stopping the transactions.

Virgin Media, Tiscali and BT Vision customers who had Setanta Sports as part of a digital TV package should check with their provider, but in most cases the company should provide a refund.

U.S. broadcaster ESPN has bought the rights to the 46 live Premier League football games that were to have been shown by Setanta next season. Sky, Virgin, Tiscali and BT are all believed to be in talks with ESPN about taking its coverage.

Jason Glynn of comparison website uSwitch.com, says: 'People should wait for the dust to settle before reviewing their packages to ensure the coverage they want.'

Jessica Hyman, 29, and fiance Mike Dyer, 45, from Friern Barnet, north London, have a digital Virgin package, but have lost a lot of the sports coverage they had because of the collapse of Setanta.

Jessica, an account manager with a photo library, and Mike, a writer and composer of musicals, say they will wait to see whether Virgin links up with the ESPN channel.

'We are sports fans, but we don't want to end up paying even more for the coverage we lost,' says Jessica. 'We are keen to stay with Virgin because we live in a Grade Two-listed building and can't have a Sky satellite dish on the roof.'
