Canal+ signs Macrovision deal

Canal+ has signed a multi-year licensing agreement for Macrovision’s electronic programme guide (EPG) patent portfolio. The operator joins a list including BSkyB, Foxtel, Portugal Telecom, Sky Italia and UPC Broadband.

Canal+ is licensing Macrovision technology under the NDS and Macrovision agreement on EPG patents. That agreement, agreed in April, provides NDS with a license for Macrovision’s Gemstar patent portfolio and allows the technology company to offer licensed EPGs to pay-TV operators.

Samir Armaly, senior VP, licensing, Macrovision, said: “This agreement is another important example of the value that our intellectual property brings to pay-TV operators and the subscribers they serve. Canal+ Group joins a growing list of leading pay-TV operators worldwide that have elected to take a license under our EPG patent portfolio.”
