Eurosport HD compensates for low ad revenues

Eurosport has close to three million subscribers for its HD channel. The TF1-owned sports network says that as of June 30, 2009, Eurosport HD was in 2.7 million homes.

The company said the speed of technical deployment and commercial launch illustrated the group’s expertise, capacity for innovation and responsiveness. Eurosport International is now available in 59 countries and 20 languages. 116.8 million households now receive the channel; 75.2 million are subscribers to the channel that typically appears in basic or extended basic tiers.

The launch of the HD channel has helped Eurosport International shore up its advertising revenues that were down 26.9% year-on-year. The combination of Eurosport HD and increased subscriber revenues from Central & East Europe and some Mediterranean countries meant total revenues of €147.3 million were only 2% down on the first six months of 2008. Operating profit for the first half of 2009 was €21.4m, up €3.1m year-on-year.
