ITV1 ratings hurt by 'Crimewatch' special

The appeal of 'Crimewatch' helped BBC One to recover supremacy from ITV1 on Tuesday night, as the commercial channel's 'Car Crime UK' shed 900,000 viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

'Car Crime UK' had been riding high in previous weeks when it was up against BBC One's 'The Truth About Crime' series. However, its ratings fell to 2.8m last night from 3.7m last week when BBC One screened 'Crimewatch on the Streets', a behind the scenes documentary following Strathclyde's Domestic Abuse Task Force.

The BBC One show pulled in 3.3m viewers and gave the channel a leading 15.4% share of the 9pm-10pm audience, with ITV1 in second place with a 12.8% share.

Five claimed third spot by notching up 2.7m viewers with 'CSI: Miami', a 12.2% share.

'Big Brother' managed 2m viewers and a 9.2% share, with another 552,000 catching the programme on Channel 4+1. Producers have made an effort to add intrigue by suspending normal rules in order to allow housemates to discuss who they will nominate for eviction, but ratings are so far little changed.

The fourth of six-part 19th century art drama 'Desperate Romantics' earned 1.7m viewers and an 8% share for BBC Two.
