Stringer expands Sony, but delays OLEDs

Welsh-born Howard Stringer, already running the giant Sony Corporation’s electronic and movie worldwide interests, is also to start supervising the troubled Sony-Ericsson j-v. But Sony seemingly is delaying the roll-out of its OLED displays.

Stringer has run Sony since 2005, the first-ever non-Japanese to take the top job. Now he will take the Chairmanship of Sony Ericsson, elbowing out his counterpart with the Sony half of the operation seen as taking the reins. It is also suggested by analysts that telephony handsets will fall under Sony’s influence while Ericsson moves further into telecoms.

As to the OLED problems, the Wall Street Journal is saying that Sony’s OLED high-intensity screens, anticipated for TV set production as well as lap-top use, will not be introduced for another year. Sony launched an 11” OLED back in 2007. The WSJ says losses are to blame.
