Conditional access company Irdeto has unveiled the latest generation of its solution at IBC, a fully backward-compatible conditional access system version 3 (CAS 3). The solution is due to go live with at least one operator before the end of the year.
Designed as a protection model for mid to large-sized operators in need of advanced security to protect high value content formats such as high definition and personal video recording systems (PVRs), Irdeto said it was already working with a number of customers to deploy the new system, including MultiChoice Africa. MCA will complete deployment of the Irdeto CAS 3 system on its largest satellite network covering southern Africa, IS7 Ku-band, before the end of the year.
Gerdus Van Eeden, CTO of MCA, said: “We see the added security offered by Irdeto CAS 3 as fundamental to the offerings we plan to introduce in 2010. In this economic downturn, it is particularly important to invest in first-class protection and cost reduction technology. MCA is pleased to be among the first to test Irdeto CAS 3.”
Another Irdeto CAS 3 deployment scheduled for completion by year-end involves
Skylink, the second largest DTH operation in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The new CA system will roll out to new and existing Irdeto CA receivers.
Among the features of Irdeto CAS 3 are built-in recoverability; “future-proof” security and asymmetric cryptography; tamper-resistant hardware; flash-based smart card; countermeasure against control word sharing and flexible deployment models.
Irdeto CTO Andrew Wajs, said: “Irdeto CAS 3 was designed with renewable security in its core, ensuring quick recoverability in case of an attack. We have the unique advantage of being able to cycle operator-specific algorithms indefinitely, unlike alternative offerings that restrict the number of algorithms personalized on the card.”
