BBC to sell part of BBC Worldwide?

You just cannot make this stuff up. BBC director general Mark Thompson has gone on the record to confirm that selling off part of BBC Worldwide, its commercial arm, is a serious option under consideration.

This option is one of a number of wide-ranging possibilities to free up cash for the core BBC operation. Another is to float off Worldwide in a stock market IPO. BBC Worldwide’s revenues this past year were $1.6bn.

"One of the things we should look at over this period is whether 100% ownership of Worldwide is essential going forward," Thompson told The Guardian. A part-privatization of BBC Worldwide would almost certainly see the BBC retaining a ‘Golden’ controlling share.
