Brits happy if BBC funds rival’s news | | A UK government study has found that the majority of British viewers would be happy if the BBC license fee were to be used to pay for news and kids’ programming on rival channels.
Sept 16 will see the Department for Culture, Media & Sport’s secretary of state Ben Bradshaw make a speech at the Royal Television Society’s Cambridge event saying that the study found widespread approval that the BBC licence fee should be ‘top sliced’ and provide funding for public broadcasting upon the UK’s other main networks.
The suggestion would see cash from the fee going to help pay for news, in particular local news on ITV, and kids’ and other socially important programming.
Data from the BBC published last week showed the reverse opinion. The BBC is making a great deal of noise that any diminution in its fee would weaken the broadcaster and threaten its independence.
