AsiaSat 5 up and running

AsiaSat 5 has entered commercial service, following launch on August 12 and completion of in-orbit testing.

Traffic transfer from AsiaSat 2, which previously occupied the 100.5 degrees East orbital slot, has started and is expected to be completed over the next few weeks. AsiaSat 5 is a Space Systems/Loral 1300 satellite, carrying 26 C-band and 14 Ku-band transponders, with a design life of 15 years.

AsiaSat said that the satellite “is now serving many public and private broadcasters from around the world and a number of wholesale news agencies, video service providers, teleport service providers for video and news distribution and contribution services, as well as governments and corporations for VSAT network services.”

Peter Jackson, CEO of AsiaSat, said: “We are extremely pleased to have reached this important milestone of service commencement, offering enhancement in power and coverage, and very importantly service continuity to all AsiaSat 2 users. Over the past 13 years, AsiaSat 2 has established a leading position in international broadcasting and video distribution and contribution services. We are confident that with the more advanced features, along with the added capacity and new coverage beams onboard, AsiaSat 5 will continue AsiaSat 2’s success in Asia, and play a vital role in our expanding service offerings.”
