EyeTV streams live TV to the iPhone

Elgato, the maker of the EyeTV television reception software, has released an iPhone application that makes it possible to stream live TV from the Apple Mac computer at home to anywhere in the world. Having installed a compatible USB TV receiver, the new place shifting EyeTV application allows viewers to watch, record, and enjoy live and recorded TV on their iPhone or iPod touch.

The EyeTV application accesses EyeTV running on the Mac at home to deliver these features to their iPhone: watch live TV and change channels anywhere (Wi-Fi connection required); watch EyeTV recordings; browse the programme guide; start recordings back home on their Mac immediately or schedule them for later and view and edit their recording schedules

The EyeTV on the Mac converts live TV to the correct format for streaming to the iPhone, ensuring optimal picture quality.

When on the road, viewers access their EyeTV at home using the free My EyeTV application. The EyeTV application can automatically find the Mac when the viewer is away from home if their router supports UPnP or NAT-PMP protocols. Alternatively, people can manually configure their router and/or use a dynamic DNS service.

Rival SlingMedia recently released its placeshifting iPhone application on a worldwide basis after previously restricting it to the United States and the UK.
