Sky deal to offer movies, sport on Freeview

Freeview customers will be able to get Sky's most popular channels from early next year under a deal signed today between the satellite broadcaster and IP Vision's Fetch TV.

BSkyB's Sky Player, its online version of the iPlayer, will be a standalone service on the Fetch TV's broadband-enabled set-top box.

Fetch TV is a video-on-demand service. Its set-top boxes also offer access to Freeview channels and the BBC iPlayer and can be used across any broadband service.

Existing Sky TV customers will be able to access a range of content for no extra cost based on their core subscription.

Non-Sky customers will be able to sign up to a choice of TV packages via a monthly subscription paid directly to Sky.

However, all customers will need to buy a Fetch TV box, which costs £219.

The Sky Player's channels include Sky Sports, Sky Movies, and Sky News among others.

My System: Various digiboxes, broken Nokia 9800S, numerous analogue boxes. My lovely little lappy, HP Omnibook 6100

It's very misleading of $ly to claim that it's a "deal to offer movies, sport on Freeview".

What they mean is that if you pay them, either directly, or indirectly if you're already a $ly customer, then their machine, which is going to cost you extra, will also receive Freeview channels.

I think that puts it into perspective.
