‘Terminator’ film franchise up for auction | | The latest Terminator film, ‘Terminator Salvation’, the fourth in a highly lucrative franchise, has not exactly set Hollywood ablaze. Its latest revenue numbers are just $371m, while T2 earned $520m while T3 racked up more than $433m in revenues. The rights to make new editions of the Terminator movies are now up for auction.
A few weeks ago the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was sold for $60 million, and the Terminator franchise is likely to go for far more. It is worth remembering that the Terminator series has always been in the hands of movie independents, although its distribution has been handled by the majors.
Halcyon Company bought the franchise in May 2007, and produced the recent release. Several of the major studios are said to be interested, most particularly Sony which has released some of the episodes internationally.
The rights for sale include the ability to make new Terminator films, plus new spin-offs. Halcyon itself is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and the auction is being handled by FTI Capital Advisors.
