BBC2 digital switchover in region

Seven million viewers across the North West of England have been taking part in the biggest overnight change in UK television history as they welcome in the digital era.

The digital switchover was due to begin in the Granada TV region in the early hours of Wednesday as analogue BBC2 is turned off.

The remaining analogue channels of BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five will also be permanently switched off four weeks later on December 2 from households served by the Winter Hill transmitter.

Terrestrial TV will be off air for some viewers until the first stage of switchover is completed by late afternoon.

Once services are back on air, viewers of Freeview, BT Vision and Top Up TV will need to retune their equipment.

Jo Waters, regional manager for Digital UK, said: "Almost half a million viewers in the North West will be able to get digital TV through their aerial for the first time. But even if you've had Freeview for a while, remember to retune your TVs and boxes when the signal comes back on."

More than 30 advice points are offering face-to-face support across the region during switchover and roadshows will be running in Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and Preston.

The Switchover Help Scheme is still welcoming applications from eligible older and disabled people to get help to convert one television - including a choice of equipment, installation and aftercare. Eligible people who have already converted a TV set without assistance can still apply to convert a second set by contacting the Help Scheme on 0800 408 7654.

On the eve of the switchover on Tuesday night, a light and sound display on the history of television was due to be unveiled in Manchester city centre by Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly, with images projected across Exchange Square onto the exterior of the Urbis exhibition centre.

Ms Daly said: "After switchover, TV in the North West will be strictly digital. It's great news because it means more channels and more choice for everyone. Whatever your favourite show, make sure you're ready for digital so you can keep watching!"
