New boss for C4, ITV next

Lord Terry Burns, a former permanent secretary to the UK’s Finance Ministry, has been appointed the next chairman of Channel 4. Task 1 is to oversee the selection of a new chief executive, while Task 2 is to seek a possible partnership with the BBC.

Media regulator Ofcom made the announcement on Thursday because the broadcaster is publicly owned. Burns has held a number of high profile jobs in recent years, including leading a review of the BBC for the government, reviewing the Football Association and leading the group which regulates the lottery. He is currently chairman of Abbey National, a UK savings & loan bank.

ITV is also reported to have narrowed down its selection option for its next CEO. Now strongly tipped is a former chief executive from merchant bank Merrill Lynch, Bob Wigley. Wigley is currently chairman of ‘yellow pages’ group Yell.
