Firmware update allows HD recording on Sony PS3 | | PS3 owners get an early Christmas present from Sony
Sony PS3 owners can rejoice; it’s now possible to watch and record channels in HD. The PlayTV add on and the newly released 1.21 firmware update is all that’s required to jump aboard the HD bandwagon.
The good news is that PS3 owners across Europe will be able to watch Freeview channels broadcast via DVB-T standard for free. Unfortunately that privilege will not extend to UK users as Freeview’s upcoming HD channels will be broadcast in the DVB-T2 standard.
However, fret not, PlayTV will still be able to bring joy into your life by upscaling the picture on channels to near-HD quality, helping justify that shiny new plasma screen in your living room. You can also record one channel while viewing another at the same time. Nice.
Further good news is that picture quality beamed to mobile phones will also be optimised for folks who can’t do without shows on the go. It’s undoubtedly the upscaling that we’re most excited about, though; HD Cheryl Cole on a Saturday night? Thank you, Sony.
