Canal Plus expects flat performance

French pay-TV giant Canal Plus expects the number of net subscribers at the end of 2004 to be either the same as it was a year ago, or slightly higher. Chief financial officer Eric Pradon said net additions to the standard Canal Plus subscription totalled 17,000 in October.

The company - controlled by the Vivendi Universal media and telecommunications conglomerate - saw third-quarter operating profits slip to €96m from €133m. The slump was caused by rising costs, among them the price of screening the Athens Olympics.

Overall, Vivendi Universal posted profits of €776m in the three months to September 30, up from €131m a year ago. Revenues fell to €4.7bn from €5.9bn last time.
